Alessandro Pluchino is Research Scientist and Aggregate Professor at Department of Physics and Astronomy at Catania University; active in the field of dynamical systems, chaos, statistical mechanics and complex networks. In the last years, through the innovative tool of the agent based simulations, he started to work on applications of mathematical and computational models to social and economical systems. In 2009-2010 he simulated the dynamics of promotions within a pyramidal or a modular organization, demonstrating how the application of random strategies would allow, under certain conditions, to circumvent the so-called "Peter Principle" and to improve the efficiency of the system. This interdisciplinary research received a great attention from the international community and was awarded with the 2010 Ig Nobel prize for Management from the Harvard University (USA). Recently he showed that the introduction in a simulated Parliament of a certain percentage of citizens selected at random and independent from the political parties allows to increase the efficiency of the Parliament itself, in terms of both passed laws and "social welfare" ensured.
